Sarah Geronimo is a successful singer and actress in her native Philippines. Since winning top honors at the Asia-wide singing competition Star for a Night in 2003, she has released the platinum-selling albums Popstar: A Dream Come True (2003), Sweet Sixteen (2004), Becoming, (2006) and Taking Flight (2007). She has also appeared in TV series such as Sarah, The Teen Princess, Bituing Walang Ningning (Lackluster Star) and Pangarap Na Bituin, as well as in films such as Filipinas, Captain Barbell and Lastikman.

Sexiness

Unlike most American or European songbirds, Sarah Geronimo keeps her sexuality very much under wraps, preferring to promote a squeaky clean image that appeals to very young fans and likely wouldn't offend any elderly folks. Her record sales in the Philippines haven't suffered as a result, but if she ever hopes to seriously take on the mainstream U.S. or other Western markets, a sexy makeover might be considered.

Success

Sarah Geronimo had a very early taste of celebrity, starting out as a cast member of Pen pen de Sarapen on Filipino television at the age of 3 before appearing on a number of other kid's shows. While her acting career seems to have taken a bit of a backseat to her recording career, she does make the occasional big screen appearance, and has also been featured in the teen-oriented television series Sarah: The Teen Princess as well as the popular prime-time soaps Bituing Walang Ningning (Lackluster Star) and Pangarap Na Bituin.

Sarah Geronimo's greatest claim to fame is her No. 1 placing on the Star for a Night program, the Asian version of American Idol. Her win secured her a contract with Viva Records in 2003, and she has scored a handful of platinum-selling albums as well as nearly 20 Top 10 hit records in her native country since. Her half dozen or so chart-topping singles to date have logged more than two years overall at No. 1, including "Forever's Not Enough" (32 weeks) and "Ikaw" (36 weeks).

For someone so young, Sarah Geronimo has won an outstanding number of awards. Some of those accolades include Star Girl 2003, Outstanding Female Role Youth Model in the Field of Entertainer, Outstanding Manilans Award 2004, Gawad America's Female Entertainer of the Year for 2005, and Box-Office Entertainment Awards' Female Recording Artist of the Year for 2005 and 2006. She also received two ASAP Pop Viewer's Choice Awards in 2006 for Best TV Character and Best TV Theme Song ("Bitiung Walang Ningning"), and she won the prize again in 2007 as Female Performer of the Year. That same year, she earned Anak TV Seal's Most Admired Female TV Personality, Yes Magazine's Female Hitmaker of the Year as well as Starmometer's Female Artist Of The Year.

Sarah Geronimo Wins Star For A Night

While she experienced her first taste of fame as a child actress, it would be her singing voice that would establish Sarah Geronimo as a major sensation. Her father enrolled her at the Center For Pop Music when she was 6, and her years of honing her vocal abilities finally paid off on March 1, 2003, when, at the age of 14, she beat out 10 other finalists in the Asia-wide singing competition Star For A Night. Her voice earned her the cash prize of a million Philippine pesos, as well as a 10-year recording deal with Viva Records.

Sarah Geronimo's debut release Popstar: A Dream Come True was released in September of that year. The track "To Love You More" topped the singles charts for almost four months, which helped propel the album to sextuple platinum status in the Philippines. Her acting career also kept her in the spotlight, with supporting roles in movies such as Captain Barbell, Filipinas and Annie B., as well as parts on a number of TV shows.

In 2004, the teenaged sensation landed a starring role in the drama series Sarah: The Teen Princess and also became a regular on the weekly variety show ASAP. She landed her first lead film role in Lastikman opposite singer Mark Bautista as well. Her sophomore album Sweet Sixteen was issued that November, and went on to achieve double-platinum sales status in the Philippines. That collection included long-running No. 1 hits such as "Forever's Not Enough" and "How Could You Say You Love Me." She also appeared in concert in the U.S. that year as part of the Night of the Champions tour.

In 2005, Sarah Geronimo recorded the theme song for the film Can This Be Love, which quickly became a gold record. She also joined the cast of the teen series SCQ Reload: OK Ako as Hero Angeles' love interest, and returned to the U.S. that year as part of the Pinoy Idols: Return Of The Champions tour. Viva Records issued Sarah Geronimo's first live concert disc The Other Side: Live Album in 2005, while her third studio album Becoming (2006) produced the mega-hits "I Still Believe In Loving You" and "Carry My Love."

Benchmark for ‘kilig’ flicks

The new John Lloyd Cruz-Sarah Geronimo romantic comedy "A Very Special Love" has received a grade of "A" from the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) for its "sincerity" and for setting a new "benchmark for kilig movies with substance."

An "A" grade entitles a movie to a 100-percent amusement tax rebate.

The CEB report credits the film's direction for being "unpretentious and snappy"; the screenplay, for being "real and engaging."

The movie follows the blooming romance between an unlikely pair—an obnoxious magazine publisher (Cruz) and his put-upon assistant (Geronimo). Shades of "The Devil Wears Prada," with a romantic twist.

The editing, cinematography, musical scoring, production design and sound engineering were similarly praised.

As for the performers, Geronimo was described as "bubbly and raw," while Cruz was noted for being "in his usual good element."

The supporting players—led by Dante Rivero, Rowell Santiago and Irma Adlawan—were also "noteworthy" and "contributed much to the film's [success]," the CEB members said.

Earlier this year, the animated flick "Urduja," the Cinemalaya winner "Endo," and the drama movies "Caregiver" and "Ploning" received "A" grades as well.

The CEB is under the auspices of the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

Sarah Asher Gerónimo is a Filipina singer, actress and model. She is the winner of the Philippine reality show Star for a Night hosted by multi-platinum selling artist Regine Velasquez.

In the summer of 2005, Sarah together with her fellow champions reunited for a United States Tour of Pinoy Idols: Return Of The Champions which was brought to selected cities in the U.S. for a two-month period.

"Sweet Sixteen" has been awarded double platinum selling over 60,000 copies. But VIVA claimed that the album would have been reached quadruple platinum if piracy was not evident. In addition, Sarah is slated to stage her biggest major solo concert yet "The Other Side" sometime in August, afterwhich she will be filming her launching movie under her management VIVA Entertainment.

Sarah is now a mainstay of ASAP '06, a once-a-week, noontime, musical variety show, hosts Little Big Star, a reality star search for kiddie singers, now on its second season and is lead star to ABS-CBN's top primetime soap opera, "Bituing Walang Ningning", a spin-off of the 1985 classic box-office hit movie. She stars as Dorina, the role originally played by Sharon Cuneta in the movie version in 1985.

Sarah Gerónimo, tinseltown's newest Cinderella, grew up in Sta. Cruz, Manila, in a rented house.

To say that Sarah loved to perform is an understatement. She actively participated in school programs and joined many singing contests. At three, she was already in the kiddie show "Pen pen de Sarapen." She was also cast in "For Kids Only" and "Hiraya Manawari". She was part of the first batch of stars in "Ang TV."

But it was Sarah's talent for singing that her father chose to focus on and improve by enrolling at the "Center For Pop Music Philippines" at six years old.

He trained Sarah at home for two hours everyday.

There is always indeed, a bright side for Sarah Gerónimo. No matter the workload, she says she enjoys it so much when kids join her onstage when she performs.

Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz were greeted with a jampacked mall when they visited Cebu for their tour of their upcoming movie A Very Special Love. SM Cebu was completely occupied by screaming and hysterical fans - it means that the Sarah-John Lloyd tandem is working! Writers Pilar Mateo and Julie Bonifacio say that Sarah and John Lloyd are completely comfortable with each other during the whole tour!

Special Love

"A Very Special Love" is this year's romantic-comedy film featuring the first team-up of Geronimo and Cruz.

The story revolves around Miggy (Cruz) of the Montenegro clan, a rich man who owns several businesses including a publishing firm that he manages; and Laida (Geronimo), the breadwinner of her family.

She is hired as an editorial assistant for Miggy's magazine 'Bachelor.' Eventually Miggy decides to make Laida his own personal assistant and even forces Laida to pretend to be his girlfriend during an event.

The question is whether a snobbish and elitist man like Miggy can fall for a simple woman like Laida.

The movie is a story of two young people from totally different worlds who will discover that love can transcend boundaries.

Aside from Cruz and Geronimo, the film cast includes Joross Gamboa, Matet de Leon, Al Tantay, Gio Alvarez, Irma Adlawan, Marianna del Rio, Miles Ocampo and CJ Jaravata.

John Lloyd is Sarah Geronimo's first kiss

Young actor John Lloyd Cruz is singer Sarah Geronimo's first big screen kiss.

Geronimo refused to give details of their kissing scene, and just encouraged the viewing public to watch their first movie together entitled "A Very Special Love" which premieres Wednesday, July 30th.

"Abangan niyo na lang po 'yun (first kiss) sa movie," Geronimo said.

When asked if Cruz was her first kiss in real life, Geronimo just smiled and refused to comment.

After three months of working together, Cruz and Geronimo developed a friendship that they said they will definitely miss.

"Si Sarah kasi ang pinaka-genuine na taong nakilala ko sa business hindi natatakot ipakita kung sino siya. Walang front, walang pretensions sobrang totoo lang ang makikita mo at saka 'yung appetite niya," Cruz said.

"Pareho din si John Lloyd napaka-genuine na tao. Napasaya niya ako, 'yun lang," Geronimo added.

Geronimo, who turned 20 on Friday, July 25th admitted that she received a Louie Vuitton makeup kit from her leading man.

The birthday celebrator before blowing her cake's candle wished only for the success of their film.

Sarah Geronimo, superstar?

Know there will be vehement, if not violent reactions, to this column's title from die-hard Noranians here and abroad, but it seems that the time has come for them to accept that Nora Aunor, a dear friend and fellow Bicolano (she comes from the city of Iriga in Camarines Sur and I from the poor town of Libon in the province of Albay), can now live in peace and quiet and relish her glory days as the Philippines first real superstar.

And she should be happy that another girl is captivating the country's imagination, enthralling millions of Filipinos with her performances as a singer and now drawing thousands to the multiplexes to watch her in the movie A Very Special Love.

No, this isn't an exaggeration because I (along with other friends) queued for tickets at the Glorietta 4 cinemas to catch the 8:15 p.m. screening of the movie on its opening day last week. Lo, and behold, the line of excited fans was already snaking around the lobby an hour before the scheduled screening.

Glorietta 4 has a standing policy of no-SRO (Standing Room Only) but it seemed that on that particular screening, the policy was breached as there were people standing at the back and others seated on the aisle.

As the house lights dimmed after a spate of theatrical trailers and commercials for the main feature, the crowd settled down but not for long as they screamed in delight, laughed and even gave Sarah Geronimo's performance occasional but very enthusiastic applause.

For nearly two hours, everyone (nearly a thousand people in the theater) was mesmerized by the girl from Sta. Cruz, Manila, who won the grand prize in an amateur singing contest on television with her nearly perfect coming timing, a natural flair for drama, and a naturalistic approach to acting.

Surprisingly, she had John Lloyd Cruz in her palms and the poor guy had no choice but keep himself in acting cadence with the singer-turned-actor in both the comedic and dramatic sequences.

The movie opened with P14 million gross in more than a hundred screens across the archipelago, and that is no mean feat, especially these days when Tagalog-language movies are being thrashed at the box office by Hollywood blockbusters. This only proves that the new generation of Filipino movie audience is ready for their own screen heroine, not someone passed on to them by their parents or grandparents.

The movie is a co-production between ABS-CBN's Star Cinema and Viva Films. Credits go as well to the effective promotion the network did for the movie, it did wonders for the creation of awareness for Sarah Geronimo's first full-length role. The plugs that run till the wee hours had everyone saying, this must be some interesting stuff why not watch it.

So, Vic del Rosario Jr. is very elated over the box-office results of his new movie. I was on the phone with him the day after I went to watch the movie to congratulate him personally. He said the box-office results were not expected, but he was hoping it would do better than what they projected. The first day gross nearly had him gasping for breath in incredulity. But now, I hope it has sunk in his mind that Viva (who created the megastar) has created a new superstar.

John Lloyd and Sarah talk about ‘love'

During their press conference for the movie 'A Very Special Love', John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo got more personal by revealing their sentiments on love.

John Lloyd has always been open about his relationship with fashion editor, Liz Uy and he describes it as the most mature relationship that he had so far.

"Siguro kasabay na rin ang pagkaka-edad ko," he began. He said that his girlfriend views things in a wide perspective, even their relationship.

"We have less pressure in making the relationship work," John Lloyd said. He explained that they have set directives to make their commitment beneficial to both of them.

On the other hand, Sarah Geronimo said that falling in love is not something you plan for. But right now, the 19-year-old singer said that she is not yet ready to have a boyfriend.

"Hindi pa ganun ka-broad yung knowledge ko sa mga bagay-bagay at ayoko din pong ma-disappoint ang taong yon. Gusto ko kung magkaka-boyfriend man ako, gusto ko po sana siya na ang pakakasalan ko. Ganun po ang 'A Very Special Love' aking mentality," she shared.

She mentioned too that she has a crush but has decided to keep mum about it. "Nakakahiya po sa kanya," the teen star giggled. Sarah admitted also that there's a singer-actor who's 'umaaligid' but she's not taking his advances seriously.

When asked if they would consider falling in love with each other should the circumstances be different, John Lloyd immediately answered 'Yes!' while Sarah blushed and jokingly asked for help from her mom.

The two then enthused that they have built a good friendship during the shoot of 'A Very Special Love.'

They share common interests like love for food, particularly Filipino cuisine and keeping positive about a lot of things in life.

"Pareho naming love na love tumawa aloud. Pero kaming masayahing tao. At first kala ko napakaseryoso niyang tao eh. Parang mahirap lapitan. Parang hindi ka kakausapin. Pero hindi pala. Ok pala siya," Sarah said about her co-star.

'A Very Special Love' is directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and will be shown in theaters on July 30.

John Lloyd finds happiness with Sarah Geronimo

Talented actor John Lloyd Cruz faces changes in his life and career as he turns 25 this coming Tuesday, June 24.

In a press conference, Cruz shared that aside from having a new movie, he also has a new on-screen partner -- a partner that he consider as a new source of happiness, and that is no other than the country's Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo.

"Kasi talagang si Sarah OK kami, nag-click kami. So we are very happy together kapag nasa set kami gumagawa ng eksena," Cruz said about his new leading lady for new movie "All About Love."

Cruz told abs-cbnNEWS.com that he enjoyed every moment with Geronimo during filming.

"Yung trabaho mahirap na so hahanap ka ng source of joy doon sa mismong trabaho--at hindi ako nahihirapang hanapin yon. Dumadali siya dahil sa mga taong nandoon sa loob ng trabaho, everyday you look forward na magshu-shooting ka, gumagaan," the actor said.

The actor also refused to answer if there will be a kissing scene in the movie.

Cruz and Geronimo worked together for a special episode of ABS-CBN's longest-running drama anthology "Maalaala Mo Kaya." The MMK episode has been shown at least thrice due to public demand.

Cruz who had been identified with his long-time on-screen partner, actress Bea Alonzo, admitted that he feels some trepidation over how audiences will accept that he has a new love team.

"Well may takot may kaba pero mas higit yung excitement kung paano at kung tatanggapin ba ng totoong taga-suporta ko yung pelikula."

He added: "Yun nga ang parang somehow parang challenge ko sa mga talagang tunay na susuporta sa akin. Kasi magandang chance ito para makita ko na pwede mo akong iparehas sa iba at pwede pa din akong suportahan."

"Maganda din itong move--medyo daring lang in a sense na yung iba ay nagbabanta na boboykotin, hindi susuportahan. Pero ako naniniwala na yung mga taga-suporta namin ni Bea they know better than that," Cruz said.

Cruz is also set to do a series of shows with heartthrobs Piolo Pascual and Sam Milby abroad for the last quarter of this year.

With a new partner and new projects lined up for Cruz, he still finds time to share his blessings. As a post birthday celebration, Cruz is set to go Katutubo Village in Porac, Pampanga to help in a free medical check-up to young Aetas.

When asked about his birthday wish, the actor replied: "Hindi ko sinasabing nasa akin na lahat pero gusto kong isipin na lahat ng kailangan ko ay mayroon ako. Maaaring higit pa sa kailangan ko ay mayroon ako, pasasalamat na lang, maraming salamat na lang sa lahat ng mga tao at narating ko ang dapat kong marating."

Cruz, who is very private when it comes to his love life, also shared that as of the moment he has not yet set a date on when he will get married.

"Ako wala pa po sa (isip ko) wala pa, hindi ako nagse-set ng edad. Kasi baka sabihin ko 30 pero baka halimbawa next year mangyari. Walaa kong sini-set kumbaga kung kailan siya dumating kung kailan dapuan 'yon na 'yon.

Recently, Vince Uy, brother of his sweetheart Liz Uy said that they really welcome the actor to their family.

"Masyado lang mabait ang family nila. Kumbaga they only have good words for people, siguro nagkataon lang na mas malapit lang ako sa kanila, napakabait ng pamilya noon," Cruz said.

When asked if he still have a dream role he would like to portray, Cruz said: "Ang dream role ko, kasi ngayon ang nakaka-challenge sa akin ay yung mga roles na akala mo ay simple lang yung natural lang sa mga tao. Yun pala yung pinakamahirap na i-portray kung ano ang normal at kung ano ang natural doon ako mas nahihirapan ngayon."

Cruz said that right now he is taking a break from doing television dramas. He is set to do movies this year.

Singing, acting come naturally to Filipina diva Sarah Geronimo

Sarah Asher Tua Geronimo was born to parents Delfin Geronimo and Divina Tua-Geronimo. The third of four children — with siblings Johna Rizzie, Sunshine Grace and Ezekiel Gabriel — Sarah grew up in a rented house in Sta. Cruz, Manila on July 25, 1988. She is also the niece of the TV host of Ating Alamin and owner of a TV production company, Gerry Geronimo.

To say that Sarah possesses a natural love of performing is an understatement. She actively participated in school programs and joined many singing contests throughout her childhood. At the age of three, she was cast in the children's show Pen pen de Sarapen. She also took part in For Kids Only and Hiraya Manawari and later became one of the first batch of stars in the hit kid's afternoon program Ang TV. Yet it was Sarah's knack for singing that would cause her father to focus on developing her talent by enrolling her at the Center for Pop Music, Philippines at six years of age. Her father also encouraged little Sarah to train at home for two hours each day.

In September 2003, Geronimo released her debut album entitled Popstar: A Dream Come True. The album received multiple awards and sold more than 180,000 copies. She also staged a highly successful first solo concert at the Music Museum in the same year. The album produced different singles including "Forever's Not Enough" as well as "Sa Iyo."
Aside from singing, Geronimo also acted in supporting roles in films such as Filipinas, Captain Barbell, and Annie B.. After winning in Star for a Night, she appeared in several GMA Network shows until she finally landed a contract for several programs at TV giant ABS-CBN, her home studio until now.

On March 1, 2003, at age fourteen Sarah emerged as the grand prize winner of the said singing competition with her rendition of the song "To Love You More." She won P 1 million and a managerial contract at Viva Artist Agency. The prize money was spent on tuition fees and the operation of her eldest sister.

After this turning point what followed are albums, concerts, her own soap opera, a mainstay at ASAP (a Sunday variety show), supporting roles in movies, endorsements, and legions of fans. She became a popstar, a teen princess, a role model.

Sarah paved the way for the next generation champion singers. They are Mark Bautista, Rachelle Ann Go, Raymond Manalo, Erik Santos, Sheryn Regis, Christian Bautista, Frenchie Dy, Jerome Sala, and more still competing. At ASAP, champion singers show off their winning form at Champions Showdown.

When not busy being a popstar, Sarah spends time with her family, they go to Sunday mass. Sarah enjoys reading J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, and plays video games.
